This project began as a documentary assignment in 2011, while President Hugo Chavez Frias was still alive, and continued until 2014, during the violent protests that erupted in Venezuela demanding a change of government under the regime of Nicolas Maduro.
Having grown up in an environment of political instability, I documented the childhood of children in several towns and villages in Vargas, a state located on the Venezuelan coast.
Despite being only a few hours away from the chaos of Caracas and the ongoing political issues, the towns of Oritapo, Todasana, and Caruao seem isolated from it all. However, during the lull between two presidential elections and the death of Chavez, children are often left to wander deserted streets, frequently skipping school to gather near the sea.
My aim with this project is to capture the serene life of the Caribbean coast through the eyes of my 16-year-old self.
