Nine-year-old Yehor lived in Mariupol as it was relentlessly bombed by Russian troops, keeping a diary to draw the atrocities of war. His images gained attention throughout Ukraine and inspired volunteers to coordinate his family’s escape.
The boy sketched pictures of soldiers, tanks, burning trees and Russian helicopters firing at buildings. “These are soldiers and they’re shooting,” Yehor said. On his birthday, Yehor drew salad and potatoes, the meal he longed for as he sheltered from Russian missile strikes.
Their house was destroyed and Yehor’s grandfather was killed. “I have a wound on my back,” Yehor said. “Mama is missing a piece of flesh on her arm.” In this drawing, Yehor’s grandfather is shown with wings to carry him to heaven.
An activist published Yehor’s drawings on social media which gained nationwide attention, encouraging Helen, Yehor’s mother, to take the risk of escaping Mariupol with the help of volunteers who pretended to be Russian sympathizers.
Helen said the diary saved their lives.

The Amsterdammer
As the founder of the Netherlands’ largest student-run newspaper, The Amsterdammer, I created the website, all social media platforms, designed the logo and crafted the media’s brand. As Instagram Stories gained popularity over Snapchat in 2018, I learned how to use After Effects to create motion graphics to animate our content. Additionally, I created a social media team to help promote our content with a wider audiences. Our readers are students from the University of Amsterdam.
