Description: Larry Malcolm Smith Jr. aged out of the foster care system in October 2020 when he turned 21, the age most youth in New York City age out. Like him, almost 8,000 foster kids were still awaiting adoption before the start of the pandemic in New York City. For those of them who don’t find a permanent home, their 21st birthday signals their release into the world and their independence from the system many have been patiently waiting to exit. This short-film dives into the challenges that children who aged out of the foster care system faced during the pandemic, co-produced with Hiba Yazbek.
