International flight routes to Venezuela
Miami-Caracas was once the most popular international route in the US, with over 1.2 million passenger seats sold per year and 40 daily flights to Venezuela. But for the past decade, Venezuela's aviation sector has been severely impacted by economic and political instability, safety concerns, and complete isolation from the international community. In 2019, the United States suspended all air transportation to Venezuela, exacerbating the country's isolation.
Despite the challenges, there are signs that the air traffic is resuming as thousands of Venezuelans like me are now returning to the country as the aviation sector has emerged from a decade in isolation.
As part of my master's thesis for the MS Data Visualization program at Parsons School of Design, I scraped several air traffic websites to retrieve data on flight departures from Venezuela since 2020. I created a dataset with airport data, including IATA codes, ISO codes, airport names, latitude and longitude coordinates, and corresponding CRS easting and northing values.
I used QGIS to create a map that shows the changes in routes over time, specifically focusing on the new routes that have opened up in the past year as international sanctions against the country are slowly being lifted.
